Ashley Tisdale grew up a Disney girl, but this actress-singer-producer is prepared to show the world she's as skilled behind the scenes as she is in front of the camera. By Sharon Steel. Photographed by Magdalena Wosinska

Ashley Tisdale has learned from experience to avoid New Year's resolutions at all costs-and this year is no different. "I remember this one New Year's resolution six or seven years ago, I was like, OK, I'm going to hit the gym and work out. I am not kidding you, I never worked out a day that year," Tisdale says, laughing. "I didn't even step foot in a gym!"

But just because she's not making conventional resolutions doesn't mean the 28-year-old hasn't changed since her heyday as a Disney Channel darling on the ludicrously successful High School Musical franchise. Over the past few years she's thoughtfully evolved into a successful businesswoman with her own production company, Blondie Girl Productions, a labor of love that keeps her on her toes when she isn't in front of the camera herself. "I'm someone who loves to work, so if I'm not acting it's nice to be able to go to the office and be creating a show or a movie and constantly working in some other way."

When I call Tisdale on a hectic afternoon just before Christmas, she's especially keen to talk about her role on the ABC sitcom Super Fun Night as Jazmine, Rebel Wilson's newly engaged younger sister whose entire life functions as a wedding inspiration Pinterest board. For Tisdale-who's still best known for her hilariously on-point performance as mean girl Sharpay in High School Musical-comedy is where she feels most at home. It doesn't hurt that the actress shot the pilot for Super Fun Night just before she herself got engaged to musician Christopher French. "I had an engagement party on the show, and it's nowhere near the type of party I would ever have myself," Tisdale says of Jazmine's over-the-top aesthetic. "It's pretty great, though, how this part is kind of mirroring [my life] a little bit."

Working with Wilson has also been a major inspiration for the 28-year-old: "It's really awesome to be with someone like Rebel on set, because she's a producer, writer, and star," Tisdale says. "It's cool to see someone juggle it all, and eventually I'd love to put myself in one of the things that I produce." Of course, Tisdale is juggling plenty herself: January 17th sees the release of the Disney Channel's Cloud 9, a movie about competitive female snowboarding, which she produced. She also worked on the ABC Family series Young and Hungry, about a personal chef who winds up romantically entangled with her techie boss. "My company is a bunch of girls who are kicking ass in production," Tisdale says. "We're really women-driven, so having these female leads proving themselves is something that I really like."

This month, Tisdale also has a cameo in Justin Reardon's anti-romantic comedy A Many Splintered Thing, but she's made sure to set aside time for her other passion: music. In December, she released a single, "You're Always Here," which was produced by her fiancé and is dedicated to the memory of her grandfather, who recently passed away. "He believed in me from an early age and taught me so many things," Tisdale says. "I really wanted to give back to him, and share with the world who he was. This song is just so personal, I wouldn't have done it with anybody except for Chris."

Giving something back to her fans, Tisdale says, was particularly important, even though she was going through a difficult time personally. "My fans are so supportive about my music, and always asking me about when my next album is coming out." But for someone with over 11 million Twitter followers, Tisdale avoids the flare-ups and prefers to keep her feed positive. "There's definitely times where I'd just love to say something, but at the same time, I'm just like, Eh! It's interesting to me how tweets are in the news now. When Michael Jackson passed away, I tweeted that I remembered when the High School Musical cast met him. And suddenly I was on a list of people that had mentioned meeting him on some news show! I was like, Whoa, people are picking up my tweets?" Tisdale says, laughing. Still, the actress knows she may be making headlines this year, between her wedding, sitcom, film, and producing projects-and she's ready for whatever comes. "I'm looking forward to so much stuff in 2014," she says. "Everything. I can't wait to see what direction it goes in."
